Pacific Development Applauds Ministry of Health for Advancing National Death Certification Standards
December 11, 2025
Port Vila, Vanuatu
Pacific Development Consulting (PDC) congratulates the Ministry of Health on completing the Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) training. This milestone improves the accuracy of death reporting and strengthens national health data. Vanuatu’s medically certified death rate has fallen from 17% in 2018 to 3%, one of the lowest globally. The MCCD training directly addresses this gap and is a critical step toward restoring reliable national health data and rebuilding confidence in mortality statistics and strengthening health policy decisions.
This context reinforces the importance of the training and its role in closing critical data gaps. PDC Managing Partner Lauro Vives, who also serves as the WHO Health Information and Digital Health Advisor, helped strengthen the initiative by steering the Ministry toward a clearer national vision for high‑quality mortality data and positioning the training as a catalyst for long‑term system improvement and more reliable health intelligence.
